Feasibility / scoping study

from €8,000

Establish whether a SERS or Raman approach can meet the requirement — before the budget is committed.

Deliverable — Analyte and substrate assessment, LOD estimate, interferent screen, and a clear go / no-go report.

Full method development & validation

from €25,000

A defensible analytical procedure, designed and validated for its intended purpose.

Deliverable — Method design, development, validation, and documentation. Measurement subcontracted or client-run.

Chemometric / ML pipeline development & validation

from €12,000

Models that survive an external test set, not just a favourable split.

Deliverable — Pre-processing, model, leakage-free validation, and a documented, reproducible pipeline from client-supplied spectra.

Spectral data analysis & interpretation

from €2,500

A bounded dataset analysed properly, with the uncertainty stated.

Deliverable — A bounded dataset analysed, peak assignment, uncertainty quantified, and a written report.

EU grant & project preparation

from €6,000 per proposal, or €1,100 / day

Project preparation and proposal firepower from a repeat principal investigator — Horizon Europe and national schemes.

Deliverable — EU project preparation: proposal authorship, technical work-package design, consortium and work-plan structure, with an optional success-fee element.

Advisory / scientific direction

from €1,100 / day

A senior scientific ally on call, at the level of decision you actually need.

Deliverable — Ad-hoc or light-retainer senior advisory.

Training / workshop

from €2,500 / day

Applied chemometrics, taught by someone who does it.

Deliverable — Applied chemometrics for spectroscopists, on-site or remote. Also runs as “Defensible Spectroscopy”, a two-day open-cohort workshop.

How the pricing is set +

The day-rate anchor sits toward the upper end of the independent-consulting range because the expertise is niche and senior. 2025 European benchmarks put general consulting freelancers near €120/hour (about €960/day); a specialist SERS and chemometrics premium justifies €1,100–1,500/day. Grant-authorship fees range from a few thousand to tens of thousands of euros depending on effort, with success-fee elements common; “from €6,000 per proposal” is conservative within that range.

Package anchors are set as from values to signal seniority and to filter unqualified enquiries. Final quotes are scoped per engagement against the actual deliverable and timeline.

Questions

Common questions

What does a SERS or Raman consultant actually do?
+
Most Raman and SERS problems are decided before the light reaches the sample: in the choice of substrate, the surface chemistry that captures the target, the matrix the analyte arrives in, and the way the resulting spectra are validated. I design that method, build and validate the chemometric model behind it, and tell you honestly whether the approach can meet your requirement. I do not sell instruments.
Do we need a better Raman instrument, or a better method?
+
Usually the method. SERS enhancement is dominated by the nanostructure and by whether the analyte reaches a hotspot at all, so a stronger laser or a more sensitive detector rarely rescues a substrate that does not capture the target or a matrix that fouls it. Laser wavelength and power do matter, but they are refinements on top of a substrate and matrix strategy. A feasibility study establishes which of the two is actually limiting you.
Can you develop and validate a Raman or SERS method for regulated QC or PAT?
+
Yes. In a regulated setting the deliverable is an analytical procedure with a defined purpose, demonstrated performance, and a plan to keep it in control, in line with the ICH Q14 and Q2 lifecycle. That means validating specificity, robustness, range, accuracy and precision against real-world variation, adding outlier detection so the model flags samples outside its competence, and treating preprocessing and the model as versioned, reproducible artifacts under data-integrity expectations such as EU Annex 11, 21 CFR Part 11 and ALCOA+.
Can you work from our spectra if we cannot share samples?
+
Yes. Chemometric and machine-learning pipeline development is offered specifically on client-supplied spectra, and spectral data analysis is available for a bounded dataset. Measurement can be subcontracted or run by your own team. Confidentiality is assumed by default and an NDA can be in place before any detail changes hands.
Do you help with EU grant and project preparation?
+
Yes. I have been principal investigator on multiple international research grants and provide EU project preparation as a defined package: proposal authorship, technical work-package design, and the structure of the work plan and consortium, for Horizon Europe and national schemes. Engagements start from €6,000 per proposal or €1,100 per day, with an optional success-fee element negotiated privately.
How much does a SERS or Raman feasibility study cost?
+
A feasibility or scoping study starts from €8,000 and covers analyte and substrate assessment, an LOD estimate, an interferent screen, and a go/no-go report. Full method development and validation starts from €25,000, and chemometric or ML pipeline development from €12,000. All anchors are "from" values; the final quote is scoped per engagement against the actual deliverable and timeline.
Are you tied to any instrument vendor?
+
No. The practice is hardware-agnostic and has no vendor allegiance, and it is provided privately and independently of any employer or institution. For an investor commissioning technical due diligence that independence is the point; for a company it means the recommendation answers to the science and to you, not to a supplier.
Why does a spectral classifier that worked in development fail on new samples?
+
Almost always because of how the data was split, not because the model was too weak. Spectra are acquired in replicate, so a random split puts replicates of the same sample on both sides and the model learns sample identity rather than chemistry. Preprocessing fitted on the whole dataset leaks as well. The fix is to split at the level of the independent unit, fit every preprocessing step inside the resampling loop, and validate on an independently acquired batch or instrument.
Do you provide technical due diligence for investors?
+
Yes, on request. It is an independent scientific assessment of a spectroscopy, nanomaterials, or diagnostics deal, written in the language of the investment decision and delivered on the timeline of the process. Enquiries are handled discreetly.
